The Vigenére Cipher was a method of encryption originally invented by Giovan Battista Bellaso, but misattributed to Blaise de Vigenère.[1] It was used by Boston patriot, Samuel Adams and the Freemasons[2].

Prior to and during Boston patriot/silversmith Paul Revere's midnight in April 1775, Adams composed a document and used the cipher to encode it.[2] Adams used Arthur Bernard's pen name, "Cicero"[3] as the password. Following the beheading of the Horseman in 1781[4], Revere engraved the password onto his skull.[2]

In 2015, Ichabod Crane discovered two scraps of paper in Corbin's files on Reverend Alfred Knapp in an edition of Poor Richard's Almanack. The two scraps, decoded with Cicero as the password, said the Gospel of Judas and Hellfire Club.[1]
