Sicarius Spei, also known as the Despair Creature, was a demon seen on Sleepy Hollow.
History[]
In the series, Jake finds reference to the demon in Benjamin Banneker's journals. A reference to a photophobic substance that colonists in Maryland discovered when a farmer went missing and was later found cocooned in the substance. A map shows the location as "The Cave of Despair" near Aberdeen, the creature in the cave feeds on its victims misery until they kill themselves.
Jake finds a reference to a freed slave who encountered the demon at Valley Forge. The British had unleashed a demon that fed on the soldiers' despair by capturing a single soldier and imprisoning him. The demon created the illusion of a spiritual trial and fed on its captive's despair, expanding its power to feed on others and drive them to suicide.
In 2017, it attacked and imprisoned Ichabod Crane, feeding on his despair until he is rescued and the demon destroyed by his compatriots.

- The demon feeds by trapping victims in its psychic webs and offers them illusions of despair upon which it feeds. When the despair defeats the victim, he will commit suicide, encouraged by the demon, but the victim must make the choice to do so.
- The demon is so strongly linked to its victim, any damage done to the demon also manifests on the victims body.
Weaknesses[]
- Fire of Joy: A flammable compound capable of incinerating Despair's webbing and also capable of killing the creature.

Sicarius is a genus of spider in the family Sicariidae. People also call it 'sand spider', 'six-eyed spider', or 'killer spider.'
