The Shard of Anubis, formerly known as the Staff of the Hidden One,[1] is a supernatural artifact that was sought after by Atticus Nevins and later retrieved by Jenny Mills and Joseph Corbin. The Shard of Anubis was an outer casing of The Eye of Providence, a binding stone that George Washington and Betsy Ross attempted to use to turn the tide of the war against the British after they retrieved it from The Catacombs during the Crossing of the Delaware in 1776.
History
After experiencing visions brought forth by the Eye's power, Jenny, under the Eye's influence, summoned Pandora and The Hidden One from The Catacombs through The Tree of Fear. The Hidden One began to feed off of Jenny to retrieve the power of the Eye. Crane discovered that Paul Revere's nephew and apprentice, Jonathan Revere, absorbed the Eye of Providence as Jenny had and died from an explosion caused by the Eye. After making thorough research, Crane, Abbie, and Joe discovered that the Shard of Anubis can extract the Eye of Providence from Jenny as it was originally the Hidden One's Staff which was melted down by Revere to contain the Eye and to conceal its power and location from anyone associated with the Hidden One or the British. After extracting it from her when the Shard was crushed by the Hidden One, Abbie traveled to the Catacombs to contain the explosion caused by the Eye and save Jenny.
After spending what seemed like ten months in the Catacombs, Abbie was visited by Crane's Astral Form who was able to discover that the Eye had the power to send her back to the real world. Pandora appeared in her Astral Form to retrieve the Eye, but Crane and Abbie were reluctant to give it to her because they fear that she will return it to the Hidden One. Pandora cuts Crane loose from the tether to his body and tries to persuade Abbie to give her the Eye in exchange for Crane's life and her freedom from the Catacombs. Abbie, furious at Pandora, smashes the Eye to prevent Pandora from using it and Pandora left Abbie to rot in the Catacombs. Abbie and Crane were able to escape the Catacombs through the well, leaving the remnants of the Shard of Anubis and the Eye of Providence behind in the Temple of the Gods.
