"The Weeping Lady" is the fifth episode of Season Two of Fox's Sleepy Hollow. It was written by M. Raven Metzner and directed by Larry Teng. It is the eighteenth episode of the series overall, and debuted on October 20, 2014.

Synopsis[]

A woman from Ichabod Crane's past comes to Sleepy Hollow in the form of the specte known as Weeping Lady, aiming to harm anyone who might come between her and Crane. Meanwhile, Katrina and Crane learn unsettling things about each other's pasts, and Abbie has some unexpected flirtatious encounters.[1]

Recap[]

Katrina ignites Abraham's suspicions when she reaches out to Crane by using her magic and sending him a letter carried by a bird.

Meanwhile, Crane and his re-enactor friend, Caroline, are speaking at cross purposes, resulting on her making a move on him. He later makes the effort to seek her out and diffuse her embarrassment, leaving them both happier. Moments later, however, she is attacked by a spectral weeping lady.

The following morning, the distraught Crane joins Abbie at the river side where Caroline's body had turned up. He finds on the bank, the mug she had in her hand when he last spoke to her. He cannot understand what has happened to his friend.

When they investigate her death, they learn of a legend about the "The Weeping Lady", a local tale that involves the spirit of a woman who had drowned herself after being jilted. They head to the local library to track down the story, but there, Abbie is attacked by the Weeping Lady, almost drowning her. She is rescued by Crane who pulls her back through the watery portal the spirit had opened, but it is Hawley who performs mouth to mouth resuscitation.

Abbie had managed to grab part of the weeping lady's veil, which Crane recognizes as cotton lace from Scotland. He believes the creature to be a woman from his past, Mary Wells, who he had once been promised to. He tells Abbie that he had broken off the engagement to Mary largely because of her possessive jealously. He believed that she had returned to England after he had received a letter from her.

Abbie believes that Mary is targeting people in Crane's life driven by jealousy, and that she believes Katrina may be next. That night, Katrina is attacked by Mary and is able to escape with the help of her magic and the Witnesses, and reunites with Crane and Abbie.

Working together, Abbie and Katrina are able to release Mary's soul, but before departing, she points an accusing finger at the witch. Upset, Crane demands some answers from his wife, and Katrina confesses to Crane that she knew the details behind Mary's accidental death, and forged the letter he received. Had he known of Mary's death, Katrina feared he would take her body back to England himself, thereby throwing his own destiny off course. He is angered by her deception, "You are my wife... my wife, Katrina... yet there is so much that you've kept from me. You were a spy for Washington, you're a witch, you were pregnant with our son...and now this." The Horseman then arrives and is prepared to kill Crane, but Katrina holds him off, saying her husband had saved her from danger, and she would return with the Horseman if he repaid Crane with his life.

At Caroline's funeral, Crane delivered the heartfelt eulogy, then asked Abbie, "Marriage is difficult on the best day, but without trust... without honesty... how can a union between two people hope to survive?"

Moloch, meanwhile, punishes Henry for thinking for himself, and tells him that he wants Katrina alive as she is a "Hellfire Shard," a chosen vessel.
