For the character that is currently the vessel of Famine, see Helen Donovan.

"Dreyfuss used scales charged by the hunger demon and a scroll charged by that Djinn to raise the Horsemen of Pestilence and Famine."
—The Witnesses about Pestilence and Famine[src]

Famine is the fourth and final member of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Famine appears as a cloaked figure in Ichabod's dream, wielding a scythe while riding a pale horse. The mantle of Famine was last held by Helen Donovan.

History[]

In the episode, Blood Moon, Crane dreamed he was in Purgatory, Famine and the other horseman found him there and were chasing him. Famine rode a horse with red eyes and was wielding a scythe. Not long into the chase, Crane is drawn into the ground by his wife, Katrina Crane to keep him safe. He soon awoke from his dream.[2] It appears, however, that in the reality of the series, Famine was not actually made before Moloch's demise.[3]

Former Future[]

After Moloch's failed apocalypse, Malcolm Dreyfuss attempted to raise the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to help him build a new America in his image. As Death was never defeated, Death continued to play a part in the new apocalypse. The mantles of Famine and Pestilence were given to Helen Donovan and Logan MacDonald after the appropriate totems were charged by Jobe.

Using the Scales of Justice as a totem, Helen was made the vessel to contain Famine's spirit because of her hunger for power. She remained in a coffin until Malcolm attempted to trigger the apocalypse. Once Dreyfuss obtained his Horseman of War,[4][5] he woke all four horsemen and used them to take over Washington and eliminate the president so that he could take over the nation.

In an alternate reality, he then enslaved its inhabitants, fulfilling his wish to reshape America.[6] Many years later, Malcolm was still in control of the USA while Ichabod Crane is kept his prisoner. He uses the Horsemen to attack cell of the resistance. When they arrive, they are ineffectually fired upon, and take out multiple soldiers. Famine corners a woman, but is stopped by a sudden blast from a magic artifact wielded by Jenny, which diverts its attention from the woman to her. Famine rides towards Jenny when it is hit again by the same artifact and its knocked off of it's horse.

Current Timeline[]

With Lara's return to 2017, Malcolm rushes his plan and awakens the Horsemen and sends them to Washington DC to capture the president. Once they get to the White House, Famine, War, and Pestilence are met with guards that fire on them to no avail. Later, as they face Jenny, Alex, and Jake and get in close proximity of their newly found weapons, they light up and are able to use them against the Horsemen. Jenny uses a gun to shoot Famine and makes it stop. After fighting with Alex, Famine disappears, along with the other horsemen, when Dreyfuss is killed.[7]

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Invulnerable: As the Four Horsemen are stronger when they are together, no ordinary weapon can harm them.

Weaknesses[]

Trivia[]

  • Since both Death and War were once mortals who sold their souls to Moloch, it is probable that the Famine that Crane saw would have also been a mortal man who sold his soul.
  • If one doesn't count Ichabod's dream, Moloch's Horseman of Famine was the only one to not show up in the real world until Season Four.
  • Other than War in the alternate future, Famine is the only position that was assumed by a woman.
  • Appearance-wise, Famine resembles Death as represented in several media.

Cultural References[]

  • In the Book of Revelations, Famine is supposed to be the third horseman to appear.
