"Generous though you've been in allowing me Sheriff Corbin's cabin, sooner or later, I must find a place of my own...preferably with granite countertops."
Ichabod Crane

Synopsis[]

After escaping Purgatory, the warlock who triggered the Salem witch trials returns to search for a dangerous book of spells. Meanwhile, Abbie tries to trust Frank Irving again, while Jeremy struggles to find his identity after destroying Moloch.[1]

Recap[]

A former minister turned warlock, Solomon Kent, was the catalyst for the Salem Witch Trials, when he was discovered by Katrina’s grandmother, using black magic, he killed her. Kent is another one of the souls who has escaped Purgatory and is in search of the Grand Grimoire compiled by John Dee, an occult scholar who doubled as Elizabeth I’s spy master. After Kent steals the book from an upcoming auction’s inventory, killing the curators, the Witnesses with Katrina's aid respond. Katrina tells them that Kent discovered his powers by accidentally murdering a woman who didn’t return his love. He covered his tracks by giving the dead girl a demon face and calling her a witch.

The Grimoire Kent stole is incomplete; the second half is arriving in a separate shipment the next day. The Witnesses have to intercept it before the warlock can get it. Katrina does a tracking spell to locate the other half of the book, but when they arrive, Kent appears in the warehouse, and after he tosses the Witnesses aside, Katrina manages to blast him with magic of her own. He is astonished, “You are witch breed.” He tells her that there are seeds of darkness within her that she has been resisting, “Have you ever wondered why your powers betray you when you need them the most? You are walking the wrong path.”

Kent throws blood demons at Abbie and Crane and flees; Katrina says she will stop the warlock while the others deal with the demons. Kent, however, escapes, after he again urges Katrina to give into the darkness. When she rejoins her husband and Abbie, she is quiet and withdrawn.

Abbie and Crane believe Kent is trying to open a portal to the afterlife, but then realize he is trying to travel back in time and change his own his story and thereby destroying the time line. They must, of course, stop him from casting the spell. They need to tap into a convergence of mystical energy, and trace the ley lines. Abbie points out, “Before Katrina was here, we took down all kinds of supernatural threats," and they work out a plan where Crane will face off with Kent. Crane distracts him while Irving shoots him with a dart full of atropene, an hallucinogen that interacts unpleasantly with the jimson weed he ingested to enhance his magics. Then Crane informs him, “In the 21st century we make our own lightning.” Abbie then electrocutes him. Then Crane attacks Kent, and Abbie has to pull him off before they notice that Irving has disappeared. When they look for him, Kane is left unguarded, and then Irving emerges, picks up the Grimoire, and watches the warlock disintegrate. When Crane and Abbie find him, he claims the book was destroyed, too.

Back at the cabin, Abbie asks about Crane's burst of anger. He replies how high the stakes are, not just because of the possible Apocalypse, but because of their own moral lives, “We are all of us walking a razor’s edge between darkness and light." Abbie suggests that they all go get a beer, Crane says his wife is still recovering.

Meanwhile, Henry has done some reflecting, and has decided evil suits him. He is re-entering the ring.
