Synopsis[]

A series of mysterious deaths at Tarrytown Psych leads Abbie and Crane to discover that spirit is involved.[1]

Recap[]

With Crane sidelined with a bad cold, Abbie and Jenny investigate a series of unexplained deaths at Tarrytown Psych, which brings up painful memories of their mother, Lori (Aunjanue Ellis), for them both. While at the hospital, they contact Irving for any insights into the victims, but he says none of the deaths make any sense, they are completely unmotivated. When they review the security footage of the latest victim, they are shocked to discover the spirit of their mother in the room with him, and upon checking, each of the apparent suicides before him.

Abbie consults with Crane who sympathizes, and speculates that Lori had been driven to suicide by demons, and perhaps she has "somehow... brought her back now to force others at Tarrytown down the same road." Hawley then arrives with research material and matzo ball soup for Crane, which he dosed with sleeping pills. With Crane down for the night, Abbie, Jenny, and Hawley, return to Tarrytown.

Meanwhile, Henry manipulates Katrina into nurturing the demon baby at Fredericks Manor, telling her that her history with a motherhood is lacking. The demon child still appears as a human to her, but then appears as what it is when it feeds from her life force.

At Tarrytown, Abbie thinks that their mother has become a monster, while Jenny just wants her to have some peace. They are forced to intervene to prevent a patient, Walt, from committing suicide. Abbie is then transported to a disused wing of the hospital by her mother.

Jenny, while searching for her, is left a message on a door which reads 'TPRJLMIL'. The sisters learn that the message was a code for a video session, and together they watch their mother speak of her torment, and of a nurse they had previously encountered, Nurse Lambert (Cynthia Stevenson). Lambert had told Lori she was a bad mother, and she should kill herself. In the session, Lori is told there is no nurse Lambert. The sisters realize nurse Lambert had been with Walt as well, and she also knows Irving. Believing Lambert to be behind the deaths, they rush to rescue Irving before he can commit suicide.

He tells them, "The nurse, Lambert, she gave me some pills, then everything she started telling me about taking my own life, it just made sense, and suicide seemed like the only thing to do." They found that the pills had been psychotropic drugs, and research revealed that Lambert was a ghost or demon who had once killed 21 patients across the country while working as a nurse in the 1950s. They think Lori may be trying to fight her.

The sisters return to the disused cell, and discover it had been Lori's. The spirit of their mother speaks to the sisters and tells them of a journal she had, with a an ancient hex in it that can banish Lambert. Lambert then manifest and snatches Abbie. Hawley pursues her and Jenny runs to retrieve the journal. Lori tries to intervene with Lambert, to protect Abbie, and Jenny finds the journal and recites the hex that banishes Lambert.

Crane is called, and he brings them the supplies needed for Abbie and Jenny to summon their mother, and learn that she had known Abbie was a Witness all along, that she has watched over them and fought for them. She tells Abbie, "the journal, it keeps the secrets. There's a weapon hidden in its pages. You find it, you were meant to go further than any of us, you were meant to win this war." She tells them they have freed her, they say goodbye and watch as her spirit passes on.

As they drive away, Irving emerges from the woods and climbs in to the car, "Police call it "escaping." Whatever happened back there with your mom gave me an opportunity, I took it. Long as I'm in there, I got a target on my back. Out here, I got a chance to make things right... Now get me out of here."
